Yesterday was just one of those days where you look around and you're like damn how'd I get myself into all of this? Aka taking on way too many projects/ classes that are over my head. In an attempt to broaden my knowledge I am taking a few classes outside of my usual Fashion Journalism/Merchandising courses and they really are giving me a run for my money (College Math is not one of my strong points). However when I finally had a second to sit and down a coffee, I remembered a quote that has stayed with me through a lot of daunting times,

"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone."

On a much lighter note, I have a wonderful little surprise for all of you that I will be posting in the next few days to catch you up and a little somethin' somethin' I've been working on!

It's well known that I am Carine Roitfeld's biggest fan, and with each little flick of her magic fashion wand she bewitches me further and further. Her latest takeover, as guest editor for VMan was graced with the "regular" men of New York City. Not so regular by any means these smoking mere mortals are your Florist, your mechanic and even local firefighter.
I dont think that I spend enough time documenting my love for menswear but it is something I am almost equally passionate about as women's fashion. Roitfeld wrote to the men in her editors letter, "Fashion can be a difficult thing for men to follow... sometimes men's fashion can look to crazy to be believable, but I think a man should be elegant and effortless." Men that can take fashion risks in the most subtle ways truly have a talent. The fine mixture between rugged and refined can be the most successful of style tactics. But really who am I kidding, none of us have even noticed what these 10 men are wearing.

Shocking Pink and January Blues

It's about that time for school to start up again, Monday to be exact. But I am wishing for summer. I want mini skirts sans tights, flowing dresses and a tan. The only thing getting me close to the feeling of summer is getting my bikini bod on, a la Bikram. One of my New Years resolutions was to do more yoga and I am proud to say I have actually been making some progress in that department. If you havent tried Bikram before it's basically hell. At least for the first few classes until you get over the fact that you are doing yoga in a 105 degree room and it actually turns into a relaxing and toning exercise. Not to mention you are pretty proud of yourself for making it through that hour and a half without fainting, vomiting, etc.

I suggest you all give it a try, Let me know how it goes for you!

Taking part in one of my very favorite Sunday activities, Brunching. On this extremely drizzly Sunday we went to my very favorite restaurant, Cafe De La Presse. It's a little piece of Paris, perfect for relaxing over some amazing food and having good conversation. Or enjoying their healthy collection of reading material (think a magazine buffs heaven).

I am enjoying this sweater dress immensely. It's really a great thing to find a sweater dress that you can just throw on, belt and feel chic. With my suede go-go boots I really do feel like I'm spending a day in Paris in January! A girl can dream....

I'm sure I've made my strong affection for turbans known but I think this may be my very first post wearing one. To dress up my fortune teller-esque look I chose my most eccentric jewels and a pair of lace up boots to wear to dinner with my best friend. He always appreciates my outfits the most!

This week has been a fairly crafty one for me thus far. I made my wonderful boyfriend a photo-album for his birthday, a collection of our adventures, and even stepped foot into the kitchen to make him some birthday treats (above, angel food cake cups). These delicious snacks are full of layers of angel food cake, whipped cream and cut-up strawberry's. They really are to die for, and easy!

It had been quite a long while since I had been back to my sweet home town of Whistler. It felt so good to finally be home with my loved ones and dog, I was reluctant for my little vacation in the snow to end.

I'm sure some of you just absolutely love the snow and everything that comes with it, but I am not a fan. It took me growing up in below zero temps to actually learn the art of layering, or just plain dressing against frost bite. I am now pleased to say that I have gotten so good at dressing for the cold that I could practically write the book on it (and maybe I will). It takes layering things that in your mind sound like a disaster, tights under pants, long sleeve, leather jacket, fur coat. You get my drift.

Once you have successfully prepared yourself though, the cold can be quite endurable. In fact I even went skiing!

They Say That The World Was Made For Two

This outfit is becoming one of my holiday "looks". This meaning I can wear it during the day for my various needs and it translates seamlessly into evening. Voila! The perfect outfit for a girl with no time to change....or time to do her hair at that.

If you guys have been following my blog for awhile you will notice that I've gone through a few different hair styles. The current happens to be the most natural and easiest to care for. To get this easy hair look it only takes a few steps and practically no time at all:

1. I have pretty straight drying hair, so to get it to cooperate and stay in waves all day I wash it before bed and sprits it generally with a texture spray. I tend to change products often but one that always works is Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray.

2. Next I quickly zap my hair with the blow dryer just to dry the roots and I sleep on it damp.

3. When I wake I find myself with lightly waved hair but to get the look I'm going for I need to first prep it with a little hair spray, like Bumble and Bumble holding spray.

4. Next I section my hair off in parts of about an inch each and run my straightener through it softly twisting, and pulling it through the iron. This gives me the perfect undone/waved look that lasts through my many hectic days (including the foggy sometimes misty SF weather).

5. To finish it off I let the waves cool and give it another once over with the holding spray. I want it to look natural so I stay away from any thick or heavy products.

How To Throw an Unforgettable Holiday Party

This was a post I did as a guest blog for a good friend but thought it was more than appropriate to share. Here it is, my guide to hosting this holiday!

If you are anything like me, you love a good old night of festivities. Or an entire season of them. I am quite fond of everything that comes with the territory of being the hostess (except for the clean up, but really can you blame me?) so yearly I throw a holiday party to get together with everyone that I love and enjoy each others company. The whole hosting thing can actually be stress free, and here is how:

First and foremost you must choose a theme. You may think your party doesn't need a theme, but trust me it's way more fun seeing a bunch of your friends dressed to the nines. This year our party theme was Gatsby Holiday Cocktails.

After you have set a divine theme that will have everyone anticipating the event, you need apply a level of ambience to your party. Since ours was inspired by the book The Great Gatsby, we did used little quirky decorations like stacks of books on the mantle, little bowls of snacks, candles and mason jars for our drinks. The best decorations, though were our D.I.Y. chalk board signs and photo-room. The signs took about 10 minutes total, and were adorable and perfect for a hostess on the spot.

You must always think of an appropriate playlist for your party. Music is very important to adding a party like feel to the whole thing. Since ours was based in the 1920's we played only music from that time period and it even inspired some to dance the Charelston.

Now heres where it gets tricky. Your guests are probably expecting you to whip up something great for them to snack on and of course drink. This year we asked everyone to bring their own prohibition style cocktails and we would provide some ourselves for a kind of drink pot-luck. Our drink of choice was a Mint Julip, which we put in mason jars. They were a huge hit with the guests.

For snacks we chose a few little bowls of peanuts and sweets, nothing too much as you don't want to get in over your head with recipes. Plus, I'm not much of a master in the kitchen.

And of course a hostess must always look her best. I went for a ACNE dress, that hangs to my knees and has a cut-out back. I dressed it up with a necklace that hung down through the cut-out, vintage YSL shoes and a long feather in my hair. I kept my makeup minimal but smoky with dark merlot colored lips. You must keep in mind that us girls always want to add on more when we are stressed, sometimes ending up looking like a costume disaster. But keep your cool, pick your outfit out ahead of time and stick to the plan!

LifeStyled: Ultra Violet

The second in the LifeStyled set of Andy Warhol's Superstars is Ultra Violet. A society girl, art collector and companion to Salvador Dali, Ultra (born Isabelle Collin Defresne) was 60's glamour at it's best. Though she was older than the rest of the Factory gang, she fit in perfectly. With hair the shade of Violet and a loud personality she starred in many of Warhol's films.

Get Ultra's Look:

1. As someone who fluttered between society events and the factory she knew how to mix designer with more laid back looks. Play on both by mixing together wide legged pants with a structured jacket

2. Let fabrics contrast each other, like a velvet bustier top and light weight pants

3. Heavy jewels like the amethyst cocktail above are the perfect finish to this look

4. Even if your hair is not a shade of purple, for this look leave it natural and free, add a head scarf for extra style

4. Makeup can be exaggerated with jewel tones

5. This look is all about looking effortless but ready for anything, including shooting a movie scene on cue

Yet another end to another semester. Finishing finals, attempting at looking into the future, those kind of things. I have resorted to clothing that looks chic but is easy to throw on and comfortable enough in case I fall asleep in public (just kidding I would never do that). And the whole looking into the future thing has really got me in a pickle. I've always been extremely set on my path but now I have this little fork in the road, one headed towards The Big Apple and the other, Paris. Where should I go??? Well be sure I will keep you all updated no matter what I decide!

Life Styled: Nico

This will be the first of a Life Styled sequence dedicated to the wonderful and eternal Superstars. In honor of the woman who would sit for hours in a bath tub surrounded by candles, to start off the set will be the mysterious Nico. Female addition to the alternative 60's band The Velvet Underground and Femme Fatale of her time, Nico was a dark, foreign fantasy. Andy Warhol once said she looked like she belonged on the front of a viking ship. She was made up of long legs, boxy shoulders, kohl lined eyes and long blonde locks chopped into a severe bang. To achieve her look it's about the reserved quietness that shows through in her tuxedo jackets and masculine inspired looks.

Get Nico's Look:

1. Find the perfect black tuxedo jacket (I suggest Theysken's Theory)

2. Pair with either black wide-legs or some sleek black ponti pants

3. Dawn a killer pair of thin heeled pumps to add a sexy touch

4. Layer on the thick liner and mascara to make your eyes pop, and nude lips, hair dead straight

5. Minimal jewelry, if any just add some heavy metals.

I hope you all had a lovely Turkey day (gobble gobble). I had an enchanting time playing in the leaves in perfectly crisp fall weather, watching Bridesmaids and of course eating myself into a coma. I am so thankful for all of the incredibly special and loving people in my life. My family, friends, boyfriend and readers have given me so much support and encouragement that even in the worst of times I still have them to fall back on. I strongly believe that we create our own paths in life, but it would mean nothing without the people you meet along the way.

It may be perpetual that I have the song Nightcall by Kavinsky stuck in my head since I saw Drive (I'm even listening right now). Such a dark and brooding movie, I couldn't help but love every bit of it. Especially you know who...and the references to old 80's cop movies.

It killed my soul a little bit that the crowd I saw it with didn't appreciate it one bit. I thought I would try and shed some light on the situation for them by trying to explain the movies strategic soundtrack and cinematography style. In the end however I think they will still prefer Fast and the Furious. C'est la vie.

Since I have been cruelly plagued with writers block I have been taking a little break from writing. Instead I have been indulging in something called a social life. Maybe having this writers block isn't so bad after all. No, wait it is because finals are in a week!

I am clearly addicted to documenting every bit and piece of my everyday life (I am also clearly addicted to my Furry Jacket). This is a pretty good description of my past week. Everything has been flying by so quickly lately I wish time would just stop for a good while so I can catch my breath. But since I truly doubt this wish of mine will come true I guess I'll just have to step up my game and get with it.
As I mentioned here, I have dedicated most of my life to dressing like a sexy vamp. This however gets a little difficult when it begins to rain in sf, so my new dedication (without totally giving up on vamping) is all things furry and fuzzy. can't wait to share them all with you.

This is the last of the Indian Summer outfits until next year. I had been feigning for a hot pink mini and this is better than anything I could have ever thought up (Forever21 of course). As of late, however, my closet has been needing some serious help. It has become such an overstuffed disaster I can barely open the door without getting buried alive. If anyone has some serious organizational advice, I'm in need.

On a more serious note, I have been really touched this week by the death of LouLou de la Falaise. I've mentioned my admiration for her a few times, but I'm sure those of you who have followed her life understand. She was a true eccentric and a bohemian queen till the end. Here is a wonderful obituary for her.

I am currently reading POPism, The Warhol 60's by Andy Warhol and am even further convinced I was born in the wrong era. I'm am in a total trance by the collaborative and wide-spred artistic culture that had taken over New York at the time. With styles trickling in from London, girls wanting to be Jackie or Liz look-a-likes, and guys The Beatles. How could you not want to be apart of something that changed fashion and art forever? I somewhat believe that this time was the last real style revolution we have had. I can only hope that in my life there will be another just as great. I found these vampire teeth and realized I am so excited for Halloween. Fall is such a wonderful time of year. Fashion week kicks it off, then SF treats us to Indian Summer, then Halloween and Thanksgiving. And the coats! I feel spoiled.
Besides all of that, I always feel the most motivated in the fall. I'm not entirely sure why....

I think it's obvious why this skirt makes me happy. I feel like a little Laduree macaroon when I wear it.

We may not have a Fashion Week by any means but San Francisco does put on a mean Fashion's Night Out. An opportunity for style freaks to come out of wherever they've been hiding and party hop from one store to the next is a fete in my book. This year's was one to remember (although nothing will top watching Countess Luann belt out her song at Macy's last year atop a make-shift stage.) There were miniature cupcakes, champagne, and above all dress up a la Betsy Johnson. Oh and of course me reenacting scenes from The Black Swan, but thats normal.

The key to a perfectly styled boho chic outfit is:
being simple when it comes to details.

This may sound hard but it's a skill that can be learned. For the outfit above I mixed to overly detailed garments (lace top and floral skirt) but used a simple belt and no other accessories. This was able to calmly finish off an already loud outfit.

I hope everyone is enjoying my blond-ish hair as much as I am because tomorrow it's going to get just slightly more blonde!

You all may think I'm a little nuts for trying to get it all in to 3 days, being in Rome for actually only 24 hours but I needed a little change of scenery and Rome sounded delicious. I felt a little like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday trying to fit it all in to my day of freedom and I think I did a pretty good job.

This is how I spent my first official American Memorial Day, BBQ-ing at the park of course. I saw a brief glimpse of summer and ran with it. Playing with the picture settings on your phone can almost be as fun as a good old polaroid camera which I am still wishing I had right now to document how amazing this summer is going to be.
You may also notice I am totting not only coconut juice (which I loooove), but also a vintage OldsMobile clutch which may be one of the most amazing additions to my closet. Apparently they would give your wife one of these adorable bright orange clutches when you would purchase an Oldsmobile which makes the bag all that much more romantic.

I hope you are all treating yourselves to a few ice coffees and summery treats!

Photo Diary: Whistler/Vancouver

As I mentioned I would show some of the photos from my wonderful weekend in Whistler and Vancouver. Besides occupying myself with making mocha macaroons, chocolate mousse and rainbow jello shots, I found myself getting dressed up once again for my little sister's graduation party.

It seems that everyone is either attending a wedding or graduation this summer and sometimes it can seem impossible to find the perfect outfit and makeup to go along with it and not seem over the top so here are a few easy steps:

1. I always go for a muted or simple hue for dresses when I want to stand out but not out-shine anyone. The tan dress I wore above was perfect for this occasion

2. I usually always go with black shoes in great designs so that I can wear them with many outfits many times over ( also helps with packing light)

3. I kept my makeup simple with a little bit of shimmery gold shadow but made it fun with insanely long fake lashes

4. I made sure to get a nice tan before slipping on my dress to not blend in with the light color and added a little shimmer

Dance Yourself to Style

Last night I went to see David Guetta and Avicii play in Vancouver (Pictures coming soon) and found myself surrounded by some of the worst concert/club outfits I had ever witnessed. It was a mix between the Jersey Shore and EDC only worse than you are probably imagining. I thought I would put together a little example of proper attire when one will be dancing all night and fist pumping (if you must)

A few Tips to make your outfit and night more fun:

1. I chose flats for myself and was so happy with my decision and it didn't at all affect my outfit

2. No one looks good in rave outfits and I mean no one, not even Ke$ha so keep that in mind

3. A quarter length sleeve dress is the perfect outfit as it's easy and if you will be standing outside at all gives you a little bit of extra warmth

4. You can still incorporate the neon with things like bright accessories or nail polish. Not neon fishnets

5. A cross body bag is perfect for keeping your stuff close by and not having to worry about losing your clutch

6. If you tend to flail when you dance perhaps a pair of cute shorts is the outfit for you

Making sure I'm hyped up on coffee before a long day!

The Academy of Art University had their mini fashion week/ Graduation ceremony this past week and it was fun filled to say the least. Some of you may remember last years post about this that you can see Here.

If not, us lucky students get to be involved in the Graduate Fashion show, and various symposiums between big fashion and industry names like Nathalie Rykiel, Cathy Horyn and more. Basically It's when the fashion world graces SF and some of us that are lucky get to be involved.

Spring season always brings on festivities by the dozens! This weekend was the launching of the San Francisco International Film Festival, Easter Weekend and my besties Birthday!

For this very special birthday we gathered for dinner at Esperpento which was absolutely delicious. It's always amazing to get all of us together which is harder than you think. Although I may have eaten my weight in food we danced it off later on. The above photos are of my two best girls, who I love to death!

Then came Easter Brunch. We decided to do it at home this year and cooked up an amazing slew of Eggs Benedict, bacon, ham, potatoes and of course mimosas, mimosas and more mimosas. Ugh I love spring!

Waimea Canyon day. We hiked, yes I hiked, through the canyon until we found this beautiful waterfall.

The dress I'm wearing is one of my favourite summer pieces. I bought it at a little tiny tibetan store somewhere on Vancouver Island and have loved it ever since. I usually belt it but today I was feeling especially bohemian.

Tonight we went to a local music festival and had so much fun watching the belly dancers and listening to amazing music. I'm not ready to leave the peaceful island and venture back to the crazy city. Everything here seems to centered and full of life, and I even get inspired to wear color here (haha) and to breath new life into the blog!

I though I would update you all on my trip thus far. We spent our first day exploring the island with my cousin annie who was a wonderful tour guide. We swam in a waterfall, and rope swinged across a river. Today was spent beach hopping, snorkling and eating massive ahi tuna burritos. It's so amazing I never want to go home. I'm fully on island time and barely even feel the need to check my phone.

Travel Tips

I'm channeling my inner travelista, which really isn't too hard to do. Any chance to hop on a plane and go somewhere new is pretty much my favorite thing ever and so since I'm a little bit practiced I will share my necessities for travel.

It all starts with the outfit, this morning I woke up at 2:15a.m., hopped in a cab at 3:30 a.m. and got on my first flight by 6 a.m.. Since my mind isn't in creative outfit mode at this point of the morning I have a go to easy outfit and here it is:

This outfit is so simple theres really no going wrong. All you need are:

1. Maxi Dress- basically you will feel like you're wearing a big blanket wrapped around you, plus it's light weight.
2. A cozy cardigan- It's always freezing on the airplane, also makes for a good makeshift pillow.
3. Soft Pashmina- One word, Layers.
4. A carry all carry on- find one with lots of compartments so you can easily access your necessities.
5. Slip on and off flats

Next is what exactly I fill my bag with to make sure I have everything I need just in case:

1. Like I said before the perfect carry all- I usually grab fo my Balenciaga weekender.
2. Wallet- big enough for traveling papers, identification and cash
3. WATER!
4. Conditioning and tinting lip balm
5. Moisturizer- I choose something thicker than my usual daily moisturizer to ensure extra coverage
6. Toothbrush and toothpaste- travel sized of course
7. Bronzer- no one ever said you had to look exhausted even when you are
8. Sunnies
9. Reading Materials

This is what happens when you live with three other people who all have different tastes. Turban Tribes

I am currently turban crazed. It may be because of my film noir class I'm currently taking or the fact that it's a trend dotting the runways and social scenes. Non the less turbans are a great way to accessorize and sometimes just to hide those loose ends.

I have to admit, I have been absolutely terrible at keeping you all updated with outfit posts. I have been camera-less and without time but I promise they will be coming back. Recently I was flipping through Marie Claire when I stumbled across a story that literally stopped my heart. No it was not about the Proenza Schouler bag I've been eyeing, it was concerning the damaged lives of Afghani women and their imprisonment for crimes that in our world would barely be frowned upon. These women are put into grotesque environments for things such as being adultery, escaping their marriages or even for crimes their husband's committed. Many times their children will be sentenced with them with no money for proper nutrition.
